hey, did that pet directory ever get made? there are at least four hamsters running around the observation deck. so far they're staying kind of close to me, but if they're yours, please come get them.
[Briefly, a video feed turns on. There sure are three hamsters sitting in front of Hajime, almost posing for the camera. The camera pans to show Hajime's incredulous, perpetually tired face, showing one hamster asleep on his shoulder.]
Whoa-! Wait, wait!!
[The camera pans back quickly to the three hamsters, except now they're all running for him. He lets out a yelp and the video feed turns off.]

Erika is sitting on the chair at the desk, rather than on her bed or on the floor as is usual, and looking less than perfectly comfortable about it.
She looks up at Hajime when he opens the door, and then reflexively down at his feet to make sure he's wearing his magboots.
Erika's bedding is wiggling, at the other end of the room. Botamon is burrowing around in the sheets and knocking pillows around, its fuzzy black ears twitching rapidly whenever it pops out into the open. When it sees Hajime, it freezes...]
no subject
He doesn't notice her looking at his feet, though. All his attention is on the wiggling black lump on her bed.]
That's, uh...
[...What the fuck.]
That's it, huh?
no subject
[It looks between him and Erika, quivering faintly in...something? Excitement? Nervousness? (It's excitement. The last big moving thing it met was full of hugs. WHAT IS THIS ONE FULL OF)
Erika's hands go from lightly gripping her knees to lightly gripping each other between her knees.]
I think it's exploring. It isn't really afraid of anything.
[So different from Wormmon that way. And in a lot of other ways.
(How does she explain this to Hinata without explaining everything else? How does she make that her most pressing concern at the moment?)
(...What was his run-in with that weirdo like?)]
no subject
[Considering she's over in her chair instead of with it on the bed. He ventures closer, tilting his head as if that might help him comprehend the weird blob of quivering blackness. He'd stop short of calling it cute, but it sure is something.]
no subject
[Botamon jiggles eagerly as Hinata approaches, and flaps one ear and then the other at him...]
no subject
[Well, if it's not dangerous... he closes the distance and offers his hand for the, uh, creature? to inspect, a little warily.]
So what is it, exactly?
no subject
[...
How the fuck does she explain it.
Probably like...?]
...This is going to sound strange. You know what I've been saying about fully-immersive VR?
no subject
Is it weird to sit on a girl's bed? It's probably weird to sit on her bed, so he just crouches next to it, gingerly attempting to pat the thing's head. It's. Hm. Mochi-like??]
Uh... yeah, I remember. You're not going to tell me this guy hatched right out of a VR simulation, are you...?
no subject
Sort of. This is what we called a Digital Monster, or Digimon. They're programs with AI...
[Botamon wags its ears furiously and presses up into the contact, giving a burbling purr. It's soft as velvet.]
We used to embed our own programs in ones like these for surveillance, since they're so small. This one's called a Botamon. But it being here doesn't...make sense. You know, outside of VR.
[Lie by omission. That's not why it's concerning - but it's a better expression of that concern, here and now and to Hajime, than the truth is.]
no subject
[He keeps petting it, a little lost for words. He can't really reconcile that with reality? Things that are virtual just don't exist in the real world. That's what makes them, you know, virtual. He's pretty sure, anyway.]
So... is it actually alive?
no subject
[y'know, 9S and shit]
That's what made them so useful for hackers. Managing them is difficult, but they're so sophisticated that not just anyone can manually imitate what they do. [...She's rambling out of confusion. Backtrack. Refocus.] Anyways...it looks exactly like it would in VR. I don't know what to make of it.
no subject
[It feels real to him. It's obviously not a hologram, but something tangible and real. And soft.
...It's actually a little relaxing? Like petting an animal, if those animals were odd black blobs of... data. Or something.
He isn't going to interrupt her rambling explanation. Honestly, it's kind of nice, just letting her talk about something she's clearly knowledgeable about. He's always been a better listener than a talker.]
Well... I guess it makes about as much sense as anything else on this stupid station so far, huh?
no subject
Hinata's taking it well, she thinks. Or, no, not just taking it well - he has a point. She gets caught up in her head and forgets to take a step back...]
I guess. [Mm, she hums, remembering something.] Way back when, Asuka was talking about the likelihood of all our parallel universes having the same types of matter and laws of physics. Maybe data that acts like matter is the same as any other type of matter here...
[She makes a befuddled noise and shrugs, frowning at the ground. That raises other worries that really aren't any of Hinata's business.]
Whatever. What's more important is that you'll need to look after Botamon now and then.
no subject
That's a name he hasn't heard before.][...]
W-Wait, what? Why me?
no subject
[Erika's opinions about Gundam are scrawled all over her face.]
So it's important to dilute his influence by exposing it to different people. [And Hajime is more social, ergo.] I can't look after it all the time, anyways. It could sneak off while I'm coding.
no subject
[Oh. Oh. Hajime's expression twists into something mildly uncomfortable, his hands stilling against Botamon's... head? Body? How do you tell what's what??]
You know he's a Super High School Level, right? The Super High School Level Animal Breeder. If anybody's qualified to look after an animal, even one like this, it's definitely him.
[Gundam would have been Hajime's first suggestion if Erika hadn't immediately shot him down as a candidate.]
no subject
Digimon aren't animals.
[A perfect and valid rebuttal that has nothing to do with her feelings.]
no subject
[Something, you know, fuckin weird. Hajime sighs quietly through his nose and rubs one of Botamon's ears.]
He's somebody talented, Mishima.
[Which is why he's more suitable than Hajime could ever be. Them's the rules.]
no subject
I don't like him.
no subject
[Well, that's fair. He can't really argue with that, so he doesn't. Even if it would be a better idea to have someone talented with animals look after this weird little digital AI, if Erika doesn't like him, he can't expect her to give up something she likes to him.
In a roundabout way, it kind of makes him feel good that she trusts him to take care of it, instead.]
He is pretty, uh, eccentric, huh? Alright, I won't push it.
no subject
She crosses her arms, somewhat placated.]
It's not like it's going to be that difficult. Digimon aren't fragile, especially after they grow up a little. I'd rather it bond to you if it's going to bond to anyone - and it will, they're like that.
no subject
Yeah, he insulted me, too. I don't think he meant it, I'm pretty sure that's just the way he talks... like a chuunibyou, right?
[He said it...]
You say that it's not difficult, but the only pet I've ever had is the hermit crab we all passed around in elementary school...
no subject
I've never had a real pet either, but this is a Digimon. Chitose kept tons of low-level ones and it was never a problem. [shrug?] This is kind of a rare opportunity, you know? Don't pass it up.
no subject
Well... alright. I'll do my best. Just... give me some tips, if you can.
no subject
And with that...]
Back to the chuunibyou. You knew him?
