CW: CHARACTER DEATH


[ The woman in the video is in her 30s, her distinctive hair loose around her shoulders, the white stripes making her pale skin quite noticeable. She shifts nervously as the message begins to broadcast, her expression uneasy while her eyes don't quite focus on the camera. Sure, she's looking in that general direction, she's just... not actually seeing anything. After a few moments, she finally speaks, southern drawl thick with nerves that make the words waver slightly. ]

Has anyone... Has anyone died recently? Here, on the station?

[ A pause. ]

Has anyone else died and woken up again?

[ Crap on a cracker. She doesn't need this right now. ]

Something happened when we lost gravity. I couldn't move and--

I died. I was dead and then I wasn't.

[magneticfields]

[ YEAH WELL NEITHER DOES HE.

He's quiet for a moment, digesting this. ]

How do you know you were dead and not simply unconscious?

I woke up with almost twenty minutes of time missing and water in my lungs. And I know what it feels like to die.

[magneticfields]

[ He had been so focused on fixing the gravity array that he never thought to check on her, or the others. The guilt weighs down heavily. ]

What happened? I was paralyzed for a few minutes. Did that happen to you? Did that kill you?

[theycalledmeacurse]

[ She wouldn't have wanted to take him away from helping the station anyway. That's not who she is. ]

I was running in the gym when it happened. Paralysis set in and I couldn't move away from the pool water that was in the air too.

[magneticfields]

[ Despite his efforts to clear the drain, the pool had still been clogged. The fact that Rogue drowned in it is disturbing on multiple levels. ]

Have you been checked for infection at all? There's no telling what's been festering in that water.

[theycalledmeacurse]

[ Infection. After everything, that possibility hadn't even occurred to her, and yet it seems... ridiculous, in a way. She'd been through hell and back, and nowhere has to worry about germs in water. ]

There's someone coming to check on me. If there is anything to find, I'm sure they will.

[magneticfields]

With any luck.

[ Which they've been desperately short on, in even less supply than antibiotics. His brow furrows slightly at the "someone". ]

Who is it? Are they trustworthy? Or at least competent?

[theycalledmeacurse]

I don't know, and honestly I'm too tired to care.

[ Breaking out the brutal honesty with Erik at least, if no one else. Have a glimpse at her depression, sugar. ]

If they're not competent, then I'll find someone with a healing factor and ask to borrow it.

[magneticfields]

Do we have anybody with a healing factor?

[ The last thing he needs to deal with right now is Logan. ]

What we need are medical supplies and somebody with an actual education.

[theycalledmeacurse]

[ She wouldn't mind if Logan showed up here. At least then she could yell at him and demand some answers. She's in just the right mood to do it too. ]

Well, you get right on that, sugar. Let me know how it goes.

[magneticfields]

[ He sighs. Feeling even more helpless than he did at the beginning of the conversation. ]

I'll get you a unicorn while I'm at it.

[theycalledmeacurse]

I'll be looking forward to it.

[ Except not literally. Perhaps not literally ever again. After everything she's been through, to have this happen now... Her expression tightens. ]

I don't suppose keeping you on one of those bracelet leash things they have for children is an option.

[ This is a joke. Like it would make a difference. As the bitter, familiar taste of failure settles in his mouth. All he wants is to ensure that his people live. From Darwin, to the Brotherhood, to the rest of the ones he left behind, to Nina, and now Rogue the thing he wants most is the one he cannot ever seem to achieve. ]

[ If Rogue could have given him a dead-eyed stare, she would have. A child leash. Really, Erik? What a hilarious joke you've made. ]

Nope.

[ There's a pause before that flat response, and then she ends the video without warning. Somehow she doubts he'll be offended by it. ]
