[ The woman in the video is in her 30s, her distinctive hair loose around her shoulders, the white stripes making her pale skin quite noticeable. She shifts nervously as the message begins to broadcast, her expression uneasy while her eyes don't quite focus on the camera. Sure, she's looking in that general direction, she's just... not actually seeing anything. After a few moments, she finally speaks, southern drawl thick with nerves that make the words waver slightly. ]

Has anyone... Has anyone died recently? Here, on the station?

[ A pause. ]

Has anyone else died and woken up again?

[ She frowns in the general direction of the screen, despite not being able to see it. What he's describing isn't at all what she'd experienced, but while it's frustrating that she's no closer to answers, at least now she knows it isn't that - whatever he's experienced with 'sleeve sick' and all else entailed. ]

That's what I'm saying, but that's not what I experienced. I've died and woken up again before, and it was just that - waking up. That's how it was this time too.

[ this fucking place was going to be the actual death of him. ]

Well then, this is the second place that I've found where death has no fucking consequence. You die, you leave behind a corpse and then that corpse wakes the fuck up again.

[ but she hadn't mentioned stacks or sleeves or anything like that. just death and a reawakening. the fucking meths would kill for simplicity like that. ]

Did you die here?

Yeah, in the gym when we lost gravity. For some reason, I suddenly couldn't move and I drowned in the pool water. I woke up again maybe 20 minutes later and I couldn't see.

[ So perhaps 'no fucking consequences' isn't quite accurate. Because as far as she can tell, there's no physical reason she should have lost her sight, not when there's nothing else wrong with her. ]

[ well, that sounds fucking unpleasant as hell. he's died a few different ways but drowning wasn't one of them. and drowning in that gross ass pool water? ew. he wonders how she's just not scrubbing herself raw in a shower right now. ]

You couldn't see?

[ now, that's new. sleeve sickness was a thing he knew pretty well but it had never come with blindness. ]

But you can see now?

[ Her expressions tightens slightly, her resolve to handle things clinically beginning to finally slip. Everyone keeps asking that.]

No, I can't.

[ inconvenient. ]

Fucked up.

[ it's probably the nicest thing he could say. ]

And no fucking way to know if you'll ever regain it back either.

[ wasn't like there were doctor or nurses wandering around here with fancy equipment to try and cure something like that. ]

There were only minor aftereffects when I died. Nothing like that so I'm thinking it's this station. Toying with us.

[ It's the most accurate thing he could say. It is fucked up, this whole thing is. When she'd first arrived on the station, it had seemed like paradise compared to the situation she'd left behind, but now... ]

That's what I've been thinking too. And it seems like I'm the first to experience this particular station quirk.

[ yeah, he doesn't envy her. but, it does instill a small sense of relief in him that, if he were to die (which he thinks is probably likely), he's not going to have to worry about a new sleeve or someone taking his stack.

apparently, this fucking station has its own built in way of resurrection. fucking imagine that. ]

Suppose it's good that it's not permanent.

[ that was about the only good thing about it, though. ]

Maybe you just gotta wait for someone else to die. See what happens to them.

[ A good thing that death isn't permanent. She can't share that opinion, not for herself - there's nothing she can contribute to helping the others, in her present state, she's nothing but a burden trying to stay out of everyone's way. But even in those moments of depression, she still has a spark of fight left in her, a flicker of her old self that struggles up to the surface of the darkness in her mind. ]

I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. But I'm not naive enough to believe that it won't.

[ yeah, there's no way she'll be the only one to die. not on this fucking station, not with all the warning and creepy shit that he'd already seen. there would be more death. and soon enough, maybe they'd be making those pitiful 'we tried to save the world' recordings for the next unfortunate son of a bitches that ended up here. ]

Yeah, I think you're asking for too much there. This place isn't gonna be kind.

[ a vacation to the stars this was not. wouldn't the meths be so upset? ]

I'm just waiting to wake up to bodies and blood all over the place.

[ a morbid thought but an honest one. if it doesn't happen, he's going to be surprised. ]
