hey, did that pet directory ever get made? there are at least four hamsters running around the observation deck. so far they're staying kind of close to me, but if they're yours, please come get them.

[Briefly, a video feed turns on. There sure are three hamsters sitting in front of Hajime, almost posing for the camera. The camera pans to show Hajime's incredulous, perpetually tired face, showing one hamster asleep on his shoulder.]

Whoa-! Wait, wait!!

[The camera pans back quickly to the three hamsters, except now they're all running for him. He lets out a yelp and the video feed turns off.]

i don't know anything about taking care of hamsters

I've never handled a hamster before, so I'm not sure I would be the most responsible option.

oh well. we had a hermit crab we passed around in elementary school to take care of, but that's it for my experience with pets.

i'm sure they must belong to SOMEONE though. we haven't come across any, uh, "unclaimed" animals yet, right?

[He was pretty inexperienced with pets too, though he would often feed stray cats, and he also kind of had a dog, sort of? Koromaru was more of a friend than a pet, really... and he personally didn't really do much to take care of him besides go on walks with him. Otherwise, he'd had his fair share of class pets too, ranging from fish to hermit crabs to rabbits, from all the bouncing around from school to school he'd done since the age of 6. He wasn't gonna bring that up though. He elects not to comment on the first part, least the conversation steer in a direction he wouldn't prefer.]

I don't know, I haven't been here very long. This is the first I've heard of there being pets on board.

[It had been at least vaguely relieving to learn he wasn't the only one to get the message after he'd looked into the compiled info thanks to Alucard, but it still wasn't the most inspiring message, especially given his own history with the end of the world. He was just gonna do what he does best though, and bottle that shit right up with a careful dose of apathy regarding the situation at large. He'd chat about theories and whatnot with people, sure, but it was mostly out of boredom than any sort of actual investment.]

[He doesn't know if Tatsuya is his real name or not, but it sounds like a first name to him. Assuming this guy is from a version of Japan similar to his own, that is. Or Japan at all.

i don't know if any of us really know what to make of it. i mean... i don't know about where you're from, but where i'm from? there's no way normal people can just walk around in space like this. not to mention being who-knows-how-far away from earth itself

i hope the planet exists. whether or not we'd recognize it, who knows, but thinking about being somewhere where even the planet is gone...

[Hm. That's a lot for him to try to handle. So he just doesn't.]

[Earth being gone would be a pretty big bummer, given all that he'd sacrificed. He wasn't gonna think about that too hard, though.]

it is, yeah. you have to be someone with talent to even be scouted to attend. it's based in japan, but it's known throughout the world. it's the easiest way to figure out if anyone's from "my" earth or not, because there's nobody who hasn't heard of hope's peak where i'm from.

You're right, though. People have been making those sorts of theories for ages and considered hacks for it, but here we are all proving it to be true.

it's like being the very top of your field. you have stuff like... doctors who discover revolutionary cures, athletes who are just untouchable, stuff like that. gamers who can't be beat no matter what, animal breeders who've saved species from extinction.

to be a hope's peak student, you have to be a current high school student, and be the very best at what you do. graduating from hope's peak means you're set for life. they're the kind of people who really make a difference in the world, the kind of people that everyone else just looks up to as an important part of society.

That's pretty intense. No wonder you figure anyone would recognize it if they were from your version of things.

no. like i said, you have to be someone talented to go there. the school has scouts just to look for high schoolers with talent.

what about you? is there anything that, like, you would use to describe where you come from to people?

I probably wouldn't be talented enough to go there, either.

[He... he probably wasn't worried about it?? Nobody else here on this station seems to care one way or another about talent, which is really damn surreal all on its own.]

i guess the only way you'll be able to find out if anyone here is from your same earth is process of elimination, then? or if you recognize them.

then again, it's not bad to get to meet people from all kinds of different perspectives. it can be pretty interesting.

[He'd love to see his friends again, but at the same time he's terrified of seeing his friends again, but he's gonna repress THAT thought right down and bottle it up, thank you very much.]

I guess we'll see with time. I agree though, it's been very interesting to meet a wide variety of different people from different worlds. It might be interesting to one day get people to talk about what their home worlds were like... though I'm not sure if anyone would know themselves what would be interesting to mention to others, considering what might feel like a norm to one might be unique to another.

yeah, you're right. i mean, i'm not really big into history, but who knows how many little things might be different between our worlds? what's that thing about a butterfly flapping its wings or something...

i guess it's something we can just try to figure out as we go, huh? add that to the list of mysteries to solve about this station

Who knows, maybe we'll find something that connects us all, if we take the time to map something out. Could be a key.

maybe. i wouldn't even know where to start with something like that... last time we tried to get everyone together for a meeting, some people brought weapons, and it mostly just turned into arguing about who was going to be in charge.

obviously we didn't reach any solid conclusions there
