I doubt it's Earth, just because we appear to be in a different galaxy entirely. By "world" they could mean a much grander scale than one single planet. This galaxy? This universe? As far as we know, it could mean all universes in existence, which might be exactly how we wound up here.
My current theory is that reality has been significantly warped in some way by the disaster caused by the previous crew, and as ground zero, the station has the most fluctuations. It's a little too convenient, as far as deductions go, but it would explain all of the things you listed. The rift may also be malicious itself, like a virus, which is why it seems to be targeting us. ... Or it may see us as the virus, and is attempting to "purge" us from the system.
And, of course, it could all be a story we're deliberately being fed, as you suggested. There simply isn't enough evidence to support any theory yet.
