o1. a m a (un: rocipilot)

[ The video opens to Amos munching on what looks like one of the protein bars the fabricator seem to produce by the dozen. He's looking straight at the camera - this is no mistake broadcast, he learned from the best how to do this - and half of him is in the frame. ]

People keep on asking me about this stuff once they realize I've lived in space a while, so I'm just going to share my wisdom with you all so I don't have to say it a million times again.

[ He stands, the angle of the video changing as he grabs the communicator he borrowed from Alex to broadcast this. As it moves, it pans over what looks like a very large shortgun type of weapon. It ends up points towards Amos's lower body, more specifically, his boots. ]

Okay, first off, keep your mag boots on. Sleep with them if you can. To engage them, lean back on your heels, and walk like you're wearing pumps. Heel first, then toe.

[ He demonstrates on camera. How does he know how to walk in pumps? Who knows?

He turns the communicator back up towards his face, after a few steps. ]

Second, if you feel nauseous when you're walking around the station, try to see if you're walking spinward or counter-spinward. As in, if you walking with the spin of the gravitation rings or not. Walking against it is going to make you feel worse.

Third, don't eat too much, but don't forget to eat, either. Sounds basic, but you'd be surprised.

[ He almost adds that coffee is not a form of food. ]

Fourth, make use of the fitness area on deck 4. We're not at full gravity here, and in space, you lose muscle mass very fast. If you don't want to turn into a noodle, weightlifting and cardio.

Fifth, stow your gear. There are all of these compartments in the crew quarters, don't leave shit hanging around. Anything can turn into a weapon if we suddenly lose gravity, or if it turns out that this barge can do maneuvers. You don't want a mug coming at your face at 4-g.

[ Seriously, stow your gear, people. It's not that hard. ]

Sixth, don't use the sealant guns without gloves. This shit will glue your hands together. Be smarter than that.

[ He resumes eating his protein bar. ]

That's the most important points I wanted to make. Now, if you've got specific questions, shoot.

Is that a white knight I see?

[ that was adorable. really, it was. ]

Well, that makes me feel better. Wouldn't wanna end up with my insides on my outsides because someone's shot a hole in this tin can with something they don't know how to handle.

Dying's just no fun anymore. First time's a little charming. Fifth time would just be dull.

[ so, he was comforted. really. ]

You asked a question, you got the answer.

[ His texan drawl doesn't quite sound annoyed so much as flat.

Though the rest just made him look confused. Was this guy shitting with him? What kind of joke was that? He just chalked it up to 'near dead' and left it at that. ]

Pretty sure he has a better idea of how to handle himself than you, cowboy. An' that gun will pierce through you, but it ain't gonna take out a hull. Almost like guns ended up gettin' designed to not vent a ship.

[personal profile] resleeves 2018-05-23 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, now that's not nice. Him and me, we've never had any gun handling games so how can you say that with any confidence? I'm not bad with a gun. I've only shot the people who deserved it.

[ some people just needed to be killed. fact of life and one that he doesn't sound too broken up about. ]

So, what are you guys, then? A bunch of space police? That why you've got a bunch of big guns and big words for the rest of us?
donkeyballs: (grim)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-24 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So has Amos. [He thinks. He hopes. He doesn't think too hard about it.] And I'll put my money on him every time.

We ain't security and we ain't tryin' to be. But we've been livin' up here for a long time and we keep runnin' into the same questions, so thought it might be a good idea to get everyone on the same page.

I'm not challenging him.

[ not right now, at least. but maybe there'd come a time when that would change. man had a gun after all and kovacs didn't. sometimes, you just had to take what you wanted.

but not right now. that would just be poor form. ]

So, you and your boy there, you've covered a lot of things. Any advice for getting off this bucket or is that above your pay grade?

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-24 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)

Sure, you find the ship and I'll fly every one of us off this damn thing, but think you'll find it ain't that easy. And as far as I know - there ain't anything else in this system to get to, even if you got out.

Without a ship, we ain't goin' anywhere.

[ all right, even kovacs would concede that point. that planet down there wasn't harlan's world despite the slight resemblance and, even if it had been harlan's world, there wasn't any way to get down there unless you wanted to space yourself.

that wasn't a top priority for kovacs.

not today, at least. ]

Good call, space cop.

[ he'd listened, he knew they weren't cops or security or whatever but that wasn't going to stop him. it just encouraged him. ]

So, the big plan is to just...wait and see what happens? I get it, there's no way to leave but I'm not very good at just waiting. It's boring.

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-24 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)

[Alex rolls his eyes but he's not going to correct him again.]

Guess you missed the meetin', huh? Big plan right now is to find a way to get to the engineerin' levels, or an ops deck, or hell, anythin' that can tell us that we ain't about to run out of oh-two in the next week. My bet is that there's gotta be a ship here somewhere - something got us here, after all, even if no one can damn well remember it.

There are plenty of people around tryin' to figure out how to get us outta here. If you're so bored, then stop complainin' about it and do somethin'.

resleeves: (O N E)

[personal profile] resleeves 2018-05-24 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Just found my way here. Didn't even know there was a meeting.

[ damn, he'd missed all the fun stuff. ]

Whining is such a nasty word. I prefer to call it non violent protestation.

[ it was totally complaining. ]

I've been looking for something to do, Space Cop, but there's not a lot of need for the talents I have.

[ you know, killing people for money. probably wouldn't go over well here. ]

But, I suppose I oughta pitch in since I don't want to be suck here for the rest of my potentially immortal life.
donkeyballs: (eyebrow raise)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Okay once was easy enough to roll his eyes over, but twice-- ]

Alex. Pilot. Not a lot of call for my skills here yet, either, but that don't mean I ain't findin' ways to help out.

[ But trust him, you'll want him on your side if they ever do find a way off this rust bucket. ]

Immortal, huh? [ Oh good, this guy had delusions of grandeur, too....... ]

[ awww but space cop was so much more fun to say. fine fine, a name was probably better to have for informational purposes, at least. ]

Kovacs.

[ see, he could play nice. hopefully no one got used to it. ]

Detective.

[ the envoy stuff was just going to have to wait. it was nice that no one here seemed to know what he was, though. the attention got a little old after awhile. he was no one's fucking deity.

and detective wasn't really a lie. bancroft had hired to solve a crime. technically, that made him a detective.

no badge required. ]

I'm sensing some disbelief in your voice, Alex. Never met any immortals before?
donkeyballs: (Default)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-25 01:01 am (UTC)(link)

Even Earthers die eventually. [ Sure, they got well over a hundred years, on average - far more than any Martian, and often triple or four times the life expectancy of anyone who grew up in the Belt. ]

So no, can't say I have. But then I met a man here that can head outside without a vac suit, so, I'm sure I ain't seen everythin' yet.

resleeves: (N I N E)

[personal profile] resleeves 2018-05-25 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't born on Earth. Guess that was the trick of it.

[ even alluding to harlan's world makes his stomach clench just the tiniest bit before he regains the ironclad control over his body that he's had since quell and the envoys. ]

Must have been something in the air.

[ or it must have been quell, revolutionizing stack technology and giving everyone a shot at eternal life. ]

But, I absolutely can't space walk. That's gonna lead to a big mess.

[ and that big mess would just mean his stack would be lost to the stars, ready to be found by any person that came upon it. not ideal. ]

Anyway, as long as you or your shotgun toting friend don't shoot me in the head, I've got a shot at living for another two hundred and eighty four years. Or more.

So, let's not do that, deal?
donkeyballs: (profile)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-25 12:21 pm (UTC)(link)
We ain't gonna shoot anyone, hoss. You can relax.

[ Even if his mind was blown, a bit. Three hundred years? Still not "immortal" but that was a hell of a long time.]

Comforting. Your words have cured my paranoia.

[ though he wasn't going to be letting his guard down. people tended to like shooting at him for some strange reason. must have been his immense amounts of charm. ]

Have you had to shoot anyone since you've been here? Serious question. Been any reason to take anyone down so far?

[ space madness was a thing, or so he'd heard. best to make sure it wasn't contagious. ]
donkeyballs: (Default)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-25 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)

[ Alex shook his head. ]

I ain't nearly as worried about the people on this station than I am about the station itself. Or whoever the hell made it.

Who knows if they plan on comin' back.

resleeves: (S I X T Y E I G H T)

[personal profile] resleeves 2018-05-25 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ again, he makes a good point. if he keeps this up, space cop would be graduating to space professor. ]

No way this place is totally wiped clean of whoever was here before us. Something always gets left behind.

[ but, even in the bancroft case, he'd had a place to start. he knows nothing about this station save for what he's gleaned himself and what he's heard from the other people wandering around. it would be like searching for a stack in the middle of a vast ocean. ]

But, it's probably behind all those conveniently sealed doors and shafts to parts unknown. Wouldn't want to make it easy on anyone especially if this is someone's game.
donkeyballs: (i'm thinkin')

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-26 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, regardless of intent - game or not - I don't think it's in any of our best interests to stick around and find out. [He did not want to be part of an experiment, thanks, he had seen enough of that shit back home.]

Those doors are our best bet of finding a way out, too. Conveniently sealed or not - that's what we gotta get through.

Hopefully then we can find the others, too. [ It isn't immediately clear who he's talking about - that's one of the problems with talking your mind without filling everyone in on what you were thinking in the first place. ]
resleeves: (⟴ 021)

[personal profile] resleeves 2018-05-26 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The others?

[ kovacs isn't sure if that was a slip of the tongue or a little kernel dangled in front of him to make him ask more questions. this guy hasn't walked off yet so he's either used to dealing with people like kovacs or he's got nothing better to do.

or he's just charmed. that's the one kovacs is going to go with because of course he is. ]

What, you think there are little green men or something behind those doors? Another group of people, sitting around in bars, getting drunk and wondering who's behind the doors that lead to us?

[ it wasn't a bad thought, not really, but kovacs doesn't like the idea at all. his mind immediately goes to whoever's running this place pitting them against each other and he is not going to die in a place where he can't be resleeved.

not until bancroft fucking pardons him. ]
donkeyballs: (talkin with my hands)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-26 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Alex has spent a lot of time with people that would be written off as assholes by many. He's seated beside one of them, right now. But mostly he just likes to talk, and likes to keep people from killing each other. It's the simple things in life, really. ]

Yeah. My whole crew is here, save the Cap. So he's gotta be on the station somewhere - my only guess is that they grabbed our whole ship. I ain't got a clue in hell what else we'll find - [ Please god let it be the Rocinante - ] But I can't see why they'd grab all of us without him. And people just wake up in corridors, so they had to be held somewhere before that, right?
resleeves: (F O U R T E E N)

[personal profile] resleeves 2018-05-26 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
What if he's dead?

[ maybe it's the pessimistic side of him but, if alex's captain isn't stalking around the corridors, kovacs would think he's dead and gone before he starts to fantasize about him being behind some mysterious door. it just made sense.]

That not a possibility? Space is pretty rough. Maybe something went wrong when you all ended up here. One bad step and you're breathing vacuum. Ouch.

[ at least it would have been quick. small favors. ]
donkeyballs: (Default)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-26 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)

I ain't callin' it until I've gotten into every nook of this place, or I find a body. [ His voice is a little tight. He's not giving up on Holden. He's going to hold onto this hope as long as he can - well past whenever it stops making sense. ]

We all woke up at different times, so it ain't like they released us all at once. And he's been livin' in space just the same as the rest of us.

resleeves: (⟴ 064)

[personal profile] resleeves 2018-05-26 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[ for the briefest of seconds, the thought enters his mind that maybe that happened to his sister. she'd been close to him when he'd passed out and then he'd woken up here, alone. was she somewhere else on this ship, trying to find him?

no, that was fucking ridiculous. it was stupid to think that. she wasn't here. she'd have found him if she was here. ]

Your show, Space Cop.

[ he remembers your name, Alex, but he can't help himself sometimes. ]

I'll keep an eye out for this errant captain of yours.

[ he has no idea what this guy looks like but figures he'd be fairly noticeable if he was searching out a bunch of people he hasn't seen in awhile. ]

Not like there's much else going on to keep my attention here.
donkeyballs: (ho boy)

[personal profile] donkeyballs 2018-05-29 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Kovacs just gets a mild eyebrow raise at the 'space cop' thing again. Maybe he should introduce this guy to Miller, if he wants to know what a Space Cop looks like. (Then again, maybe not.) ]

I'd appreciate that, thank'ye. His name's James Holden.
resleeves: (N I N E T E E N)

[personal profile] resleeves 2018-05-29 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Holden. Got it.

[ while kovacs doesn't plan on going out of his way to look for someone that might not even be here, he does intend to keep the name in the back of his mind. maybe he'll stumble over something or someone that wasn't there the day before. maybe he'd find this missing person and be a hero.

ha. what a laughable concept that was. ]

For your sake, I hope he's hiding out in some cubby hole somewhere. Would be more pleasant than the alternative.

[ you know, the one where he was dead in space somewhere. a corpse couldn't really captain a ship, could it? ]
