This roster. It seems other people have gotten it too. It's obviously evidence for what was happening here, but also a good suggestion.

They had a Chief of Security. Where I'm from, my job was to keep things secure and safe. So unless someone has reasonable objections to it, I'm going to continue that work here. Call me Chief of Security or not. I don't care.

I'm going to mark areas known to be dangerous, like the sinking doors. If there are any other locations you notice and are worried about let me know. And if anyone personally does anything harmful to another person then I will step in and stop it.

There's a distinction between working to keep the place safe and taking authority over the population here.

There are other people as qualified as you here to formally assume that role, and it's inappropriate to unilaterally claim it. I object on the basis that there are other people who should be considered for the position formally if it's open.

I would propose you do the work as you see fit, but not claim the title whether or not we call you that.

You're making a public commitment to devote your efforts to the safety and protection of the population here, and that is admirable. Perhaps another way to do it would be to say that if anyone needs help, whatever their situation, they may call on you?

Easier in a military outpost, but much more difficult in a civilian camp with a diverse people who are suspicious of one another.

[She's lived in and around Alethi warcamps enough to know, the problems the guards face happen out at the edges, around the taverns, in the places where men aren't used to command.]

Where did you hold the position last?

In what kind of world? Who- against what?

Not for the sake of political discussion. I'm merely interested. It's taboo among my people, for women to hold military rank.

You don't have a force you're a part of, a leader you report to, a territory you defend?

[She asks, brow furrowing.]

Alethi society has rigid gender roles.

Lighteyed women are artists, scholars, and a woman may support her husband in whatever his role.

Darkeyed women, depending on their nahn, may be accountants or keep shop ledgers for their husbands, but are more likely to be washerwomen, farmers, weavers, the like.

I am a lighteyed woman of a high dahn. But even so, my interest in military tactics and knighthood has been controversial enough to be heretical.
